Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Abdul Malik Tareen of the Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences (LUAWMS) met with Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan Alyani in Islamabad to review the university’s educational priorities, development projects, and future opportunities.

Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan Alyani described LUAWMS as an educational gift for the people of Balochistan, particularly for the district of Lasbela. He emphasized the strategic importance of the university’s Marine Faculty, noting that marine sciences represent a broad field with significant global potential. He encouraged LUAWMS to further highlight the economic and environmental benefits derived from marine resources and marine life.

Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan Alyani also identified several opportunities for agricultural and economic development in the region. He suggested initiating olive cultivation in the Kanraj area of Lasbela and stated that the establishment of an olive oil extraction plant would not only increase olive production but also generate employment and support value-added growth.

He further proposed setting up a dry processing unit for vegetables and fruits to reduce post-harvest losses, extend produce shelf life, and enable local farmers to access value-added export markets. Such facilities, he noted, would help preserve surplus produce, strengthen food security, improve farmer incomes, and contribute to sustainable economic development in the Lasbela region.
